PlanetSide 2 is a science-fiction online video game. It is one of the only first-person shooter games that is also has a persistent world. In fact, its only of the only MMOFPS games out there. Unlike games in the Battlefield or Call of Duty franchises, there are no “rounds” in PlanetSide 2. The game technically never ends – so there is, technically, no way to really beat the game.
So is that a downside, or an upside? It depends on who you ask. Some may call the round-based system in Battlefield and Call of Duty arbitrary. After all, how many times does the player play the same game-type or map over and over again? Is it really any different than a game that never ends? I personally don’t think so – but I suppose that beating a round of a game does give the player a sense of achievement if they win.
Players new to the PlanetSide franchise may find themselves lost at first. After all, the game really doesn’t hold your hand. Some games like Counter-Strike and League of Legends will try to match you with players within your skill range, so the fights seem more balanced or fair. PlanetSide, however, does none of that. You’re launched into an open world and must survive on your own. A player with only 15 minutes of experience may come upon an enemy with 15 months of experience.
Story: What story?
Bottom line: Want to try out something different – an experience unlike another other first-person shooter game? Give PlanetSide 2 a try, you may be in for a surprise.
